888 Launches Alberta's First Regulated Online Poker Room Alone

On Tuesday 13 October 2026, Alberta's grace period for offshore poker sites ran out, PokerStars walked out and 888 walked in. The Spirit has always had a soft spot for whoever sits down first.

Everyone expected a quiet exit. Alberta opened its regulated online gambling market on 13 July, and offshore operators were given three months to get licensed. On Tuesday 13 October 2026 the clock ran out. PokerStars shut its poker doors to players registered in the province, with no word on whether it will come back. 888 did the opposite and went live, the first and only operator with regulated online poker in Alberta.

That is the twist. Pokerfuse reported that the assumption had been that 888 would return with online casino and sports betting and leave poker at the door, and Poker Industry PRO called the move a surprise. The logic was simple. Alberta has roughly five million people, which analysts said back in July is too few to feed a poker network walled off from every other province. Five million people, one poker room. In July, 888 itself said a rollout would likely hinge on sharing players with Ontario. No such deal has been signed, so the new room runs on Alberta players alone. Sendu sendu, 888.

In poker terms, it posted both blinds and waited for company. A shared pool would mean more opponents, bigger fields and fuller tables, and the whole industry has been watching for it. The Supreme Court of Canada heard arguments on 7 October about Ontario's international shared liquidity model and has not ruled. Spinnnnning.

The other chairs are not exactly empty by accident. According to Canadian Gaming Business, GGPoker was approved in Alberta in August, and Ontario Poker reports it is holding its launch until the ruling lands. The ones who waited are watching the one who didn't.

How do youluwu know a table is worth sitting at if youluwu are not willing to sit there first? Somewhere in a province of prairies and mountains, a handful of players are about to find out how a first mover feels when nobody else is dealt in.

Poker is a game for a full table, and tonight Alberta has one seat taken and the rest waiting. Come January, the Spirit counts heads.
