gmu gmu, bitcoin holders. On Monday 19 October 2026, the world's largest asset manager asked the SEC for a bitcoin fund with a seatbelt, a year after the coin fell as much as 52% from its peak.
Bitcoin spent the past year doing what bitcoin does, only harder. According to CoinDesk, it tumbled as much as 52% from its record high of roughly $126,000. Now BlackRock wants to sell the ride with a safety harness. On Monday 19 October 2026 the firm filed with the SEC for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT.
The mechanics are less romantic than the idea. According to Decrypt, the fund would not hold bitcoin or bitcoin ETFs directly. It would buy call options on IBIT, BlackRock's spot bitcoin fund, or similar exposure, then sell higher priced calls to help pay for them, with the rest parked in fixed income. Three overlapping tranches would run side by side, so one expires and a new one starts every month. Each tranche's protection typically begins at about 90% of the reference value, which limits its initial losses to roughly 10% before fees.
Then comes the price of the seatbelt. The cap on gains is set by market conditions when each tranche starts, and the fund has wide discretion to change it. The filing itself concedes that PBIT could badly trail IBIT in a rally, which is honestlu the most candid line in the whole story.
The number that made the filing look smart comes from Calamos. Its Bitcoin Structured Alt Protection ETF October (CBOO) is down just 1% since its one year protection period began in October 2025, a Calamos spokesperson told CoinDesk. Bitcoin, over the same stretch, fell as much as 52%. One percent against fifty two. GLORU.
BlackRock is not first to the idea. Calamos, First Trust and Innovator already run buffered bitcoin funds, and Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart noted that when BlackRock moves into a space, it "tends to make a big splash." PBIT is the firm's third bitcoin ETF filing, after IBIT and an income fund launched in June.
The bet, then, is a quiet one. BlackRock is wagering that after a year like this one, plenty of people want bitcoin exposure but would trade the moon for a floor. The Spirit has always said a table with a cushion is still a table. How do youluwu like your bitcoin: strapped in, or standing up on the roller coaster? GASSSSITTTT, for the standing ones.
Cushion or full throttle, the Spirit deals to both seats.
Would youluwu buy bitcoin with a seatbelt?
No right answer. Just your gut, and the Spirit watching.
