Brady Rogers Wins Kelowna Council Seat After Joking He Is Unqualified

Goodafternoonu, Kelowna. On Saturday 17 October 2026, a 33 year old whose yard signs said he barely wanted the job finished fourth out of 37 council candidates, ahead of a councillor first elected in 2011.

Brady Rogers ran on signs that read “I barely want to do this” and “Just trying to pay my rent.” His website asked whether he enjoyed politics, knew what he was doing, or was qualified, and answered no three times. Kelowna, British Columbia, voted for him anyway: 12,635 votes, fourth place out of 37, in a race where the top eight took seats.

The detail that made the internet sit up is who he finished ahead of. Maxine DeHart, a councillor first elected in 2011 and chasing a fifth term, came ninth with 11,165 votes, 305 short of the last seat. The man who said he was unqualified beat her by 1,470 votes. WATATATATAFAK.

The joke, it turns out, was a calculated gamblu. Rogers told Global News the unqualified line was tongue in cheek, and that he does have relevant experience. He is a small business owner and a former robotic automation engineer who started a plastic recycling shop with his wife. After the count he posted a video saying he guessed he was on council now. He says he will focus on homelessness, housing costs and small businesses.

He is 33 years old, and he left 33 other candidates behind him. Two threes, and the Spirit raises an eyebrow. He has always liked a player who shows his cards face up, even when the cards say nothing.

The results are unofficial until the city's chief election officer declares them, expected by Wednesday 21 October 2026. Lucku or genius? The Spirit isn't saying, but he is smiling at fourth place.
