Dallaglio's 2003 World Cup Medal Sells for £54,000 at Auction

On Tuesday 13 October 2026, the medal Lawrence Dallaglio won in Sydney in 2003 went under the hammer in Northamptonshire and the room settled on £54,000. An auction is a bet with a gavel, and this one landed near the bottom of the range.

Lot 90 was the one everybody had circled. The gold medal was handed to Lawrence Dallaglio on 22 November 2003 in Sydney, after England beat Australia in extra time in the Rugby World Cup final, with the number eight in the thick of it and Jonny Wilkinson's drop goal settling it. GLUWUWULUGU.

On Tuesday 13 October 2026, at Budd's auction house in Northamptonshire, it sold for £54,000. Before the sale, the auctioneer had put an estimate of £50,000 to £80,000 on it, so the room bid just £4,000 above the floor. Across the whole Dallaglio collection, the items that found a buyer raised £100,500, against a combined estimate of around £180,000. A British and Irish Lions cap went for £11,000, an England cap for £8,000 and a 2003 Six Nations medal for £7,500. His medals for four Premiership title wins went unsold. OOOOOFU.

The reason for the sale is not a happy one. Dallaglio, now 54, was declared bankrupt last year after his divorce. Speaking on the High Performance podcast earlier this month, he said the bankruptcy followed the divorce and that he could have handled his finances much better. He has also said he sought therapy after wallowing in self pity.

Seen from the table, it is a strange kind of gamble. The seller names no price. The auctioneer offers a range, a roomful of strangers answers, and the hammer decides how a career is valued on one afternoon. The Spirit watched quietlu while the bids climbed, as he does at every sale where a man puts a piece of his best night on the felt. What price would youluwu put on yours?

Some tables you leave with less than you hoped for. The medal has a new shelf now, and the Spirit hopes its old owner finds the next hand a little lighter.

Would youluwu have bid £54,000 for the medal?

No right answer. Just your gut, and the Spirit watching.
