Goodnightu, night owls of the order book. On Thursday 8 October 2026, a $19 bet on a 1% long shot for White House press secretary came in within hours, and Kalshi now wants to know who placed it.
Late on Thursday 8 October 2026, someone quietlu put $19 on Katie Zacharia to become the next White House press secretary on Kalshi. The market gave her about a 1% chance. On Friday 9 October, around 2 p.m. Eastern, news outlets began reporting that President Trump had picked her, and that $19 is set to pay $1,896.
Two more bets followed on Friday, for about $74 and $80, placed around 1:41 p.m. Eastern, roughly twenty minutes before the news broke. They are set to pay $3,689 and $4,023. Three wagers, none above $100, and $9,608 in expected payouts between them. GLUWGU.
Kalshi has confirmed to the press that it is looking at the trades, which were first flagged by the Wall Street Journal. Trading there is anonymous to the public, but the company keeps records of who its traders are, and it says its surveillance routinely examines sudden spikes. Honestlu, the public record shows only that the timing was striking: nobody has shown that the bettors held confidential information. Experts point out that markets whose answer already exists in someone's head are more exposed to insider trading than sports or elections, and that a small trade can still break the law. The probe is still spinnnnning.
It also lands in a tense season. In August, the CFTC settled with a former White House teleprompter operator who had traded Kalshi markets tied to Trump's speeches.
Would youluwu have noticed a 1% door left ajar? The Spirit has noticed, and he is keeping the timestamps in his ledger, in pencil, until Kalshi finishes its homework.
Should markets on who gets a job be banned?
No right answer. Just your gut, and the Spirit watching.
