Sonay Kartal, World No. 170, Beats Svitolina to Reach Wuhan Semi-Final

Nǐ hǎooo, Wuhan. On Friday 16 October 2026, Sonay Kartal, ranked 170th after six months out with a back stress fracture, beat the world No. 6 and reached her first WTA 1000 semi-final.

Sonay Kartal made a quietlu bold bet. After a stress fracture in her back kept her off the tour for more than six months, she came back on a protected ranking, the rule that lets an injured player enter events at her old standing. She spent it on the biggest rooms, not the cosy ones. On Friday 16 October 2026 in Wuhan, the bet paid: she beat fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

Here is the number. Kartal is ranked 170th in the world. Svitolina is ranked sixth. The Independent notes that this makes Kartal the lowest ranked player to reach the Wuhan semi-finals since the tournament began in 2014. GLUWGU.

The match did not follow a script. Kartal broke early and took the first set. Svitolina then called a medical timeout for treatment on her right arm and levelled with a 6-2 second set. In the decider, Kartal broke at 5-4 and won on her first match point, when a Svitolina backhand sailed long. This was only her third tournament since the comeback, and she had already put out Anhelina Kalinina, ninth seed Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini, whom she beat 6-2, 6-0.

The road back began in pain. In March she had to retire from her fourth round match at Indian Wells against Elena Rybakina with a lower back problem. She then missed three of the four Grand Slams this year, Wimbledon included. Her career high is 44, set last summer. After this win she is set to jump to No. 87, back inside the top 100. She is also only the second British woman after Johanna Konta to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final.

How do youluwu find out whether your back is ready if youluwu never walk into the big room? Kartal found out in front of a Wuhan crowd. The Spirit's long nose has been twitching in her direction all week.

Next comes Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, on Saturday 17 October, with a place in Sunday's final at stake. The draw has only asked her to beat the best so far. GLORU to the brave, and the table stays open.
