Verstappen Takes Singapore Sprint Pole by 0.120s, Stewards Loom

Goodmorningu, Singapore. On Friday 9 October 2026, Max Verstappen grabbed sprint pole with a single flying lap, a swapped energy unit and a hearing still to come. The Spirit loves a result that hasn't been paid out yet.

Max Verstappen did not think this was possible. On Friday 9 October 2026, at the end of sprint qualifying at Marina Bay, he took pole for Saturday's Singapore Grand Prix sprint, beating Mercedes' George Russell by 0.120 seconds. By his own account he had not expected it. If it stands, it is his first pole in any qualifying format in Singapore.

0.120 seconds. That is the whole gap between the front slot and the second, and Verstappen needed only one flying lap at the end of SQ3 to get it. GLUWULU.

The road there was not tidy. Before the session, Red Bull changed the energy recovery system on his car, saying the unit had a suspected fault and the swap was a precaution. He had also skipped the soft tyres in first practice, so he reached the decisive lap without a proper simulation on them. Honestlu, that is less a plan than a bet on instinct. The session itself was stop and start: a red flag after Sergio Perez hit the barriers, a timing glitch, and an FIA admission of human error in Race Control that left some cars without their overtake mode.

Mercedes, meanwhile, ran the weekend as a split bet. Russell drove the older car specification and qualified second. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli drove the new upgrade from Malaysia and managed only seventh, 0.573 seconds behind his team-mate. Toto Wolff had said in Sepang the upgrade seemed to take the team backwards, and Friday did little to argue with him. Russell's front row is also his only one of the weekend, because he serves a grid penalty on Sunday.

And the pole is not banked. Lewis Hamilton reported over the radio that Verstappen passed him under yellow flags in SQ1, after Perez's crash. Verstappen told his team he thought he had passed before the yellow, but let Hamilton back through to be safe. The stewards called both drivers in for 22:15 local time, and The Race reported that a guilty finding would very likely cost him the pole. No verdict had been published when the Post went to press.

So how do youluwu rate a pole you can still lose at a hearing? The Spirit's view is that a provisional result is just a chip still sitting in the middle of the table. GASSSSITTTT.

The stewards are the house tonight, and the house has not finished counting the chips.

Mercedes ran two car specs in Singapore. Smart hedge or a muddle?

No right answer. Just your gut, and the Spirit watching.

"Don't change horses in midstream, say the English. Unless the horse has a suspected fault, then change it and ask for soft tyres."
