Kalshi Files Admission Rate Bets on 22 Colleges Including Harvard

gmu gmu, Ivy League. On Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October 2026, Kalshi told its federal regulator it wants traders to bet on how many applicants 22 elite colleges let in, and the same filings name the staff who must never touch the market.

Kalshi has found a new thing to put a price on: the front door of the Ivy League. In notices filed on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October 2026, the prediction market told the CFTC, its federal regulator, that it plans to list contracts on admission rates and applicant totals at 22 selective US colleges. All eight Ivies are on the list, along with MIT, Stanford, Duke and Caltech. The class in question is the one entering in 2031.

The format is the classic threshold bet. A trader says whether a school's admission rate will land below, at or above a set value, and the filing's own example is a line like 5%. Each contract settles at $1, moves in one cent steps, and carries a position accountability level of $25,000 per strike, per member. For scale, Duke admitted 4.7% of 61,935 applicants last cycle. That is 61,935 applications for a door that opened for fewer than one in twenty. WATATATATAFAK.

The fine print is where it gets spicy. The payout hangs on one line, Item C1, of each school's Common Data Set, a standard report that appears after decisions are out. A press release does not count. In Kalshi's worked example, a school announces 4.3% in March, the data set later shows 4.6%, and the contract settles on 4.6%. Honestlu, it may be the first time anyone has had a financial reason to read a Common Data Set.

There is also the matter of who already knows the answer. Admissions offices do, long before any trader. So the Duke notice bars admissions officers, application readers, institutional research staff and communications staff with early access from trading. Others in the admission and financial aid offices are barred too.

Not everyone is charmed. A voice from the National Association for College Admission Counseling told The Chronicle of Higher Education the idea was “absurd.” Kalshi told the Chronicle it hopes to launch “in the coming months”, before spring 2027 decisions, and a spokesperson told The Daily Pennsylvanian the approval process would take several weeks. As of Friday 23 October, Inside Higher Ed reported that nothing was live and no betting lines had been published. Separate filings dated Thursday 22 October also propose contracts on whether Harvard has the lowest admission rate in the Ivy League. Spinnnnning.

Every teenager with a Common App has been gambling on these odds for years, with nothing but stress to show for it. Now the stress may get a ticker. The Spirit has always said a thick or thin envelope is the oldest lottery on campus. GLUWGU.

Would youluwu bet on the gate, or only try to walk through it?

Until the first line appears, the book of luck stays open at page one, and the Spirit is already guessing which Ivy gets priced first.

Will Kalshi have a college admission market live by 31 January?
